In the framework of documenting the several aspects of the Egyptian Culture, an essential need was to document the Coptic Culture parallel to with the on-going programs in Cultnat concerning the Ancient Egyptian, Islamic and Graeco-Roman Heritage.
Cultnat starts with documenting Coptic sites and their distribution all over the country and digitizing Coptic manuscripts.
The work is implemented in three levels. The first level is gathering the data about each site: name, detailed description about the main church in the site as well as other buildings, their use, and the plan sketch for the whole site, the location, which diocese it belongs to, and the relics of saints existing in the churches and monasteries. Also documenting the artistic characteristics of each site: icons, wall paintings, architecture, manuscripts, metals, wood works, marbles, mosaics, stones, artifacts, textiles…etc. Illustrative photos are taken from exterior and interior. In order to allocate each site on the map of Egypt, points are collected by the global positioning system GPS.
In the second level, detailed information and extensive photographing will be the focus in order to cover in details the artistic characteristics within each site, and the third level will be the creation of virtual tours for specific monasteries and churches.
CULTNAT is currently working on the first level where databases and programs are built in order to facilitate the access to the information through a single easy-to-use information system and search module, using the most up-to-date technology. Various technologies are used in the implementation of interactive applications including GIS system. CULTNAT aims to disseminate in two different ways, one through a website and the other through Culturama program.
