The Monumental Inscriptions of Historic Cairo

The Project covers Islamic inscriptions that are found in a range of the most important historical monuments in Cairo. The project is done in collaboration with Dr. Bernard O'Kane, Professor of Islamic Art and Architecture at the American University in Cairo and the American Research Center (ARCE). Currently the project database is completed and we are working towards issuing an interactive DVD to make these inscriptions available for researchers.
The project database includes 3300 inscriptions related to 509 monuments, written on different materials such as stone, plaster, wood, and metal. The inscriptions are in many types of script including Kufic, Thuluth, and Naskh. The database includes over 11,000 images and 972 architectural drawings.

Objectives : The project aims to highlight the rich Arabic inscriptions on monuments of historic Cairo. The developed DVD will make these inscriptions available for archaeologists, historians and whoever is interested in Islamic heritage.
